Older women have always occupied an interesting place in society; while the young women are out smashing the patriarchy, the matriarchy have traditionally established societal structures (not always in productive ways), upheld standards of behavior, and meddled in other people's lives to an extreme degree. In the Regency and Victorian eras a group of older women 'led' society, dictating balls, events, and 'advantageous' matchmaking. They also facilitated much of the charitable and rehabilitative work, supporting a variety of reform organizations. 'Ageism' has led to a decrease in public visibility for older women as a whole, but social media has also seen an increase in influencers and fashionistas 'of a certain age'. In combination with the enduring popularity of particular actresses known for elegance, style, and talent, Lady Markby's contemporary position as a tastemaker and icon is assured.
